The former Brazilian president arrested after being deemed a escape threat
The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
