The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That
As any major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
