Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.
A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The narrative begins when the couple move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
